This elegant recording was made in January 1983 in the Munich studios of Bavarian Radio. I say 'elegant' because no pretension or exaggeration is allowed to destroy the illusion that these artists are playing in an extended area of one's own listening room. Three of the works are for solo woodwind and piano and these are entirely believable; shut your eyes, adjust to a realistic level and they are there. Of course all the participants are acknowledged masters of their instruments and so one must allow them a little headroom in the exciting third movement of the Sonata; early Milhaud (1918) written when he was in Brazil. I had heard none of these works previously so if you share my ignorance do listen to this interesting Compact Disc.'
