When EG reviewed the LP issue he had reservations about both the playing and the recording, and I have to agree. In the popular E minor Concerto Zimmermann's tone as recorded is uningratiating and a greater distance from the microphones would have helped his cause. His playing is a little strenuous and lacks sparkle—and there are some slightly sticky moments during position changes. Albrecht directs rather routine, chugging accompaniments. All the listed comparisons are superior to Zimmermann and they all have good performances of the Bruch First Concerto to complete their CDs: a rehearing of Laredo's bargain-price Pickwick version reinforces my conviction that his beautifully played and recorded disc is the best of all. In Mendelssohn's youthful D minor Concerto, Zimmermann and Albrecht are more successful, but it's a lesser work than the E minor and needs rather more than these artists provide to make a strong impact.
