The bloom on the Philadelphia Orchestra's tone is as well conveyed on CD as on LP; yet, for all his natural expertise, Muti is not yet so penetrating an interpreter of this symphony as Solti (Decca) or Abbado (DG). Further opportunities to listen to the new Solti on CD (all too often at the moment CDs arrive at the eleventh hour, the poor old LP standing faithfully in until its precocious younger brother turns up) suggest to me that it is probably the current leader in its field, with the rider that the Abbado will continue to be preferred by those who value a cooler, more analytical reading of the work.'
