This is indeed one Great Recording of the Century. The partnership between the two JBs was instinctive, the conductor forever breathing, as it were, with the singer, and both artists at one in going to the heart of the matter. Given Baker’s wonderful feeling for the text and the superb playing of the orchestras, it’s no wonder that successors have found it very hard to equal, let alone surpass, the quality of these readings.
