Franz Liszt, Composer Jorge Bolet, Piano |
Author:
Bolet uses an exceptionally wide dynamic range in these pieces which is most faithfully conveyed on CD. So, too, is the lovely sound he produces throughout. There is necessarily much pedalling in, for example, his ardent reading of ''Sposalizio'', yet clarity is always complete. Also here are a beautiful, dark-toned realization of ''Il penseroso'', and a piquant one of ''Canzonetta del Salvator Rosa''. The piano truly sings in the ''Sonetti'', and all three receive ideal performances—hear the last page of No. 104, for instance. Bolet's long-drawn-out, though never excessive, sweetness in these pieces sets off the acrid Dante Sonata, of which an almost alarmingly vivid performance is given. As well as embodying a fresh response to a wide range of moods this is obviously a great feat of pianism.'
