What remarkable talent is shown by the 14-year-old Kapell in his incomplete reading of Beethoven’s Third Concerto. That brilliance, allied to an utter musicality, is best displayed here in a virtuoso reading of Mussorgsky’s unpianistic Pictures. The Bach/Busoni possesses a quiet certainty and only the Shostakovich somewhat disappoints, for though impeccably played it is perhaps too ‘straight’. '
