This sumptuously illustrated sixth instalment of Margaret Phillips’s complete Bach continues with clean, poised playing, devoid of artifice. The watchword here is clarity, whether in the intimacy of the chorale preludes or the heft of the monumental Toccata in E (BWV566).

Disc 1 was recorded in St Bavo, Haarlem, on Müller’s mighty 62-stop organ of 1738. Framed by the “Wedge” E minor (BWV548) and the sinewy B minor (BWV544) Preludes and Fugues, the “filling” consists of a deeply satisfying mix of a trio sonata (the best known, No 6 in G), eight chorale preludes and a concerto arrangement. On the whole the changes of tempo, texture and key between pieces work well, as does the satisfying effect of juxtaposing different treatments of the same chorale melody.

Having been soothed by the Dutch organ’s equal temperament, it comes as a shock when one switches to the second disc, recorded in Paris in St Louis-en-l’Ile. Modelled on mid-18th century instruments, this recent (2004) Aubertin organ is tuned to Young’s distinctly rustic temperament. The programme here is even more enjoyable and full of zest. Much of the music is dance-orientated, with powerful interpretations of the Fantasia and Fugue in G minor (BWV542) and the Fugue alla giga (BWV577), contrasting with the sparkling finale of the E flat major Trio Sonata (BWV525). A particular highlight is the five-voice prelude on Wir glauben all’, played without ornamental superfluity.

Gary Coles’s engineering is, as ever, top-drawer, matching Margaret Phillips’s superb musicianship.
