Sandrine Piau starts off with a nicely decorated account of ‘My heart ever faithful’ from BWV68. It takes a little while for the ear to adjust to the hollowness surrounding her voice but Bach’s sense of joy comes through at full strength. I didn’t much care for the second track, ‘Wachet auf’ in the version for organ, with the violoncello piccolo taking the top line and the chorale melody given to a sackbut.
The latter seems particularly perverse when there was a fine tenor on hand who could have sung the chorale in its original version from BWV140. Emiliano Gonzalez Toro is unaffectedly simple in the prayerful aria from BWV41, a cantata for New Year’s Day. He paces the long aria from BWV183 well, without quite matching Paul Agnew for Gardiner (SDG, A/08), where time seems to stand still.
Ophélie Gaillard plays admirably: springy in fast passages – repeated listening to so many numbers with such ‘busy’ writing might prove wearing, however – and soulful elsewhere. She is silent only in the apocryphal BWV53, where the accomplished countertenor of Christophe Dumaux is complemented by strings and bells. Good support and lovely obbligatos from Pulcinella.
