The famous opening Charpentier Te Deum Fanfare sounds a bit thin - it ideally needs period instruments, but the Bizet suite of the title is surprisingly crisp and neat in Snell's clever arrangement (which includes 'The rocking horse'). I cared not at all for Beethoven Beano, which is a syncopated novelty pastiche vulgarising the charming Fur Elise. Yet Warlock's Capriol Suite really sounds well on brass; so do a pair of lively Rossini arrangements. There is much else besides, including solos for xylophone, trombone (The Londonderry Air) and tenor horn (Carmichael's Stardust). In short this is sophisticated bandstand repertoire, very well played and pleasingly recorded.
