Author:
My treasured LP copy is so full of pops and squeaks I almost feared I would miss their familiar presence. Not a bit of it. The transfer has been superbly done here is that marvellous airy Czech Philharmonic acoustic, the floating woodwinds the plangent strings, the splendidly raucous organ, the passionate voices, all just as atmospheric, only now brighter and fresher. It is tempting just to turn the volume up and get high on Janacek's revolving ostinatos and pulsating rhythms. That would probably make the fruity solo voices a bit too overbearing and remind one that the recording was not made yesterday; but it could not possibly diminish one's admiration for the idiomatic instincts of Ancerl and his orchestra or for the vigour, the splendour, the wonder of this amazing work.'
