Capella Istropolitana is a chamber orchestra—here strings only, whose Naxos recordings already occupy considerable column-length in The Gramophone Classical Catalogue, and of which this programme represents their longest journey back in musical time. The annotation discusses the works in (almost exactly) the order of the dates of birth of their composers (from Corelli to Sammartini); had the items been presented in the same order on the disc they would have shown the later composers' adherence to Corelli's model as late as 1732 (Geminiani), ignoring the horse and cart driven through the genre by Vivaldi with his Op. 3 (1711).
Manfredini, whose Torelli-influenced Sinfonia was published in 1709, may be 'excused'. Sammartini, the youngest of them, began in Vivaldi's footsteps—his is the only other three-movement work here, but the Sinfonia in A major shows early signs of his later move toward classicism. The opportunity is wasted: the programme begins with Sammartini and ends with Scarlatti, with Corelli at No. 6. Capella Istropolitana do not waste the opportunity to show themselves as a stylish and spirited band, with a clear 'fruit-free' sound, wide and effectively used dynamic range, and precise ensemble.
The recording is admirably balanced, with the harpsichord appropriately audible. There is no other current recording of the Albinoni, Manfredini, Locatelli or Sammartini, which, together with the super-bargain price, makes this a most attractive middle-of-the-road compendium of this special segment of Italian baroque music.'
