It is not possible, in the space of a short review to give much more than a summary view of the extraordinary musical richness (within the confines of the Italian seventeenth-century repertory) revealed by this record. Framed by two sonorous works for comparatively large forces, the intervening dozen pieces span a wide emotional and textural range, beautifully responded to with a virtuoso variety of expressive tone colour by Stephen Keavey and Crispian Steele-Perkins, ranging from the gently eloquent if short Sinfonia by Carlo Pallavicino to the brisk and explosive imitative opening to Nicola Matteis's Concerto di Trombe. One or two items, such as the sequence of rather formulaic dances by Girolamo Fantini from his trumpet manual of 1638, are perhaps no more than Historically Interesting Pieces, but elsewhere there are some genuine musical delights.
The opening work, by Alessandro Stradella, contains some remarkably affective harmonic and melodic moves (notably in the first Aria), and Corelli's little-known Sonata in D (virtually the only genuine work that was not included in his six famous printed works) has a ravishing central slow movement which is given a sensitively lyrical account, finely phrased and ornamented, by one of the solo violinists. And there is one real musical discovery, namely Francesco Mancini's Sinfonia from the Neapolitan opera Gl'amanti generosi which with its considerable harmonic interest and sophisticated scoring, transcends the simple and vigorous style by Alessandro Scarlatti which is its spiritual ancestor. Above all, this record maintains its interest for some 54 minutes by its imaginative exploration of the timbres of the seventeenth-century orchestral world, from the richness of the Stradella (with two instrumental groups of equal size which when combined produce an extraordinarily powerful bass resonance), to the curiously attenuated sound of the muted trumpet in C in Cazzati's Sonata La Bianchina, a classic example of the Bolognese style. For this and for the great deal of scholarly activity which lies almost concealed behind this record, we must be grateful to Roy Goodman. The result makes for informed but at the same time immensely attractive listening.'
