From a position of almost total obscurity just a few years ago, Sigismondo d’India’s works have come to the fore as one of the most exciting aspects of a more general interest in the late Italian madrigal. Until now virtually the only music from this repertory to receive much attention was that of Monteverdi and Gesualdo; to this we can now add the madrigals of both d’India and his younger contemporary Michelangelo Rossi whose tortured and fragmented jewel-like essays in the genre effectively bring its history to a close.
Following hard upon La Venexiana’s recent release of a selection of pieces from Il terzo libro (Glossa, 1/99), William Christie’s choice on this record spans the complete gamut of d’India’s style from the madrigals of the first book with their obvious indebtedness to both Monteverdi and Gesualdo (it was the latter’s influence that was to be the most important as Cruda Amarilli shows), to the basso continuo madrigals of Book 8 (theSilvio-Dorinda cycle on texts from Guarini’s Il pastor fido is one of the highlights of the disc). Not only that: selections from d’India’s solo and duet publications, judiciously chosen to give a fair impression of their stylistic variety, include two major laments. The performances are technically assured and convincing, at times breathtakingly so, and improvised passagework (at times, as at the spellbinding opening of Alme luci beate, somewhat intrusive) is delivered with panache. And yet, somehow, the result is curiously disengaged, with some music/text collisions mechanistically explored and others seemingly unnoticed. Here and in other matters (such as pronunciation by this all-French ensemble) the intimate relationship between poetry and notes that lies at the heart of d’India’s language is only imperfectly realized.'
