Two new albums from Varese Sarabande find the mercurial Jerry Goldsmith operating in a particularly droll mode. The first release combines original tracks from Our Man Flint (1966) with the sequel score for In Like Flint (1967). Film buffs will remember the Flint movies as send-ups of the James Bond series with James Coburn playing a secret agent working in a world filled with girls, gadgets and villains fighting for global domination. The electric guitars, keyboards, Solovox and Thomas organ of Our Man Flint all contribute to what the booklet-notes describe as “a surf ’n’ samba affair”. For In Like Flint, the composer reprises his main theme and adds a jazzy new theme (turned into “Your Zowie face”, a song with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse). There is also extensive, structured soloing for tenor sax, alto sax, trombones, dums, bass and guitars. Both scores reflect the pop culture of the era, and Goldsmith’s spirit operates at a fun, irreverent level throughout.
The composer’s score for Joe Dante’s latest movie, Small Soldiers, on the other hand reveals an endearingly eccentric perspective of the man. Dante has inspired some of Goldsmith’s most subversive work in the past (Gremlins, The ’Burbs), and once again his music is an ideal partner to the director’s mischievous aesthetic. In Small Soldiers the composer establishes an objective musical palette and then throws the score off-kilter with a variety of electronic sounds (for example at 3'16'' into “Roll call”). The effects are integrated without any degree of self-conscious intellect and plunge the audience directly into the supra-reality of Dante’s toy invasions. As the film progresses, Goldsmith’s orchestral and electronic colours tell us more about the soldiers than we should probably know. Every minute of this well-engineered disc is a delight; regrettably, the same cannot be said of a new double-disc set from Silva Screen. Though promising us an “essential” collection of Goldsmith music both antique and up-to-date, the production creates the impression of an unrehearsed concert run amok.'
