Not-so-young Gramophone readers may remember Vista’s LP series of Howells’s organ works, issued in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and Priory is to be congratulated on replicating this series for the CD era. The final volume has an interesting and varied programme, consisting of Howells’s last major work – the Partita – and a collection of shorter pieces from different periods of the composer’s life.
Partington’s performances are impeccable, and he keeps the music sounding crystal-clear, despite the complexity of Howells’s writing. To aid clarity, speeds are held back in the faster passages of the Partita, the Flourish and the Epilogue, and there’s a judicious use of expressive rubato throughout the CD. Partington has an ideal partner in the Winchester organ, with its majestic tutti and extensive range of orchestral colour, and it is well recorded by Priory. There’s an informative booklet, and Howells devotees can feel well served by this fine CD.'
