An attractive Holst compendium, accorded first-rate sound. Both the St Paul's and Brook Green suites come off especially well here, with Menuhin drawing a lively, affectionately turned response from the ECO strings (on excellent form throughout). I also greatly enjoyed the present crisp elegant realization of the pithy Fugal Concerto which features quite admirable solo contributions from flautist Jonathan Snowden and oboist David Theodore; indeed, the central 'back-to-Bach' Adagio radiates a most beguiling poise.
Marginally less effective are the two fuller-scored items: Menuhin's sensitive, agreeably perky account of the lovely Somerset Rhapsody must in the last resort yield to Norman Del Mar's outstandingly subtle and atmospheric 1980 recording (now happily restored at mid-price within EMI's British Composers series), and, a superbly arresting opening apart (marvellously obstreperous trombones), the Perfect Fool Ballet music emerges rather less irrepressibly than it does under Sir Charles Mackerras (a strong budget contender on Virgin Classics' Virgo label). In sum, if you fancy this particular programme, then the new compilation earns a fair recommendation. Mid-price or not, however, a mere 48 minutes of music strikes me as distinctly short measure.'
