Author:
The theatre at the Benedictine University of Salzburg drew a number of early works from Mozart and several‚ too‚ from Michael Haydn. Der Traum‚ a short‚ twoact pantomime‚ is essentially a playlet in German of the commedia dell’arte type‚ performed there at the beginning of 1767 along with a Latin tragedy. Haydn’s music consists of some 20 brief numbers‚ mostly instrumental interludes‚ marches and dances‚ but also including an Italian aria‚ a ‘Turkish’ aria‚ a duet ‘canzone pastorale’ and a Latin aria. The action of the piece is summarised here by a narrator‚ in German (his text is fully translated in the booklet).
Michael Haydn is to my mind an underrated composer. These little pieces‚ quite early works‚ are nothing very special‚ but they do show his neat technique and his capacity for evoking a mood quickly and tellingly. Listen for example to the little Andante on track 6‚ or the delicate one on track 15 (for Harlequin and Hanswurst‚ supposedly playing a cello and lute)‚ or the witty little group on track 23‚ or the wistful gavotte on track 27. Of the vocal numbers‚ the Turkish one is quite an entertaining piece‚ spiritedly sung here by Robert Holl‚ and the pastoral duet has a good deal of charm‚ with Christiane Boesiger a graceful shepherdess and the alto Markus Forster capable if a shade pallid as her swain.
Wolfgang Brunner directs all this music with good feeling for its style and its timing‚ and draws quite a wide range of period colouring from Salzburger Hofmusik‚ a Baroque group. The plot is narrated‚ unassumingly and very clearly‚ by Georg Schuchter. Altogether a pleasing disc‚ not important‚ but offering an interesting glimpse into the music heard in the Salzburg of Mozart’s childhood years.
