It was a good idea to assemble a programme of oboe sonatas by the two composers who, perhaps wrote for the instrument more rewardingly than any other baroque composer. Marilyn Zupnik has chosen two sonatas from Telemann's Essercizi Musici (B flat and E minor), one from the Sonate metodiche (G minor), another from Der getreue Music-Meister (A minor), and a fifth from the Third Part of the Musique de Table (G minor). Three of the four sonatas by Handel come from his Op. 1 collection of solos for flute, oboe or violin (C minor, G minor and F major) and the fourth (B flat) from an autograph in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The G minor Sonata though marked for oboe in the printed editions was, in fact, probably originally intended for violin while the F major Sonata, though published in G major for flute, has been found to be a later version of a piece for oboe. Handel's oboe sonatas probably date from the period between 1710 and 1715 while those of Telemann are later, falling within a period roughly between 1728 and 1740. Taken together, these sonatas represent a high water mark in the instrument's solo chamber repertory at the time, only Vivaldi, perhaps, equalling it with his fine Sonata in C minor (RV53).
Zupnik plays a modern instrument at today's pitch, defending her territory against the march forward of period instruments with an informed sense of style and a first-rate technique; indeed, her choice of programme alone suggests that she knows what she is about. Her playing is full of character with an underlying sensibility to late baroque idiom, which I found convincing and engaging. Phrases are pleasingly shaped, intonation is beyond reproach and the sound of her instrument warmly communicative. Lyrical movements such as the Andante of the Telemann A minor Sonata come over expressively with graceful gestures, while faster ones like the Allegro of the Sonata in E minor and that of Handel's F major Sonata are lively and crisply articulated. Throughout Zupnik is strongly supported by Mark Shuman and Raymond Leppard, though I sometimes found Leppard's keyboard realizations a little too flamboyant- his rapid scale-wise flourishes and so forth do not really suit the more restrained ornamental approach of the soloist. This apart, the recital can be commended.'
