In a bright church acoustic (Bethlehemkerk, Papendrecht, Holland) this set has an instant appeal. Hurford's playing is regular and vigorous, matching the full-blooded pounce of Rifkin's direction, all as fresh as a new-laid egg. Nor is there any trace of inhibition over matters of period etiquette. Though Hurford's figured bass realization and his ornamentation are impeccably correct, he plays his slow movements lovingly and his fast ones drive fearlessly forward. The strings blossom at every opportunity, their accompaniments in slow music making a warm embrace, their solos (e.g. at the start of Op. 4 No. 3) pushful and romantic. There is sometimes a little informality int the greeting between soloist and ensemble at the final cadence. In the Op. 4 Concertos, Pinnock and Preston on Archiv Produktion work within a smaller dynamic range, and they're no less exciting for that, but their authentic instruments breathe more chastely in conversations between solo and ensemble, and the slightly drier acoustic makes for a more domestic atmosphere. They play the Sixth Concerto of Op. 4 with Ursula Holliger (harp) as soloist. Generally speaking, though, it would be hard to award more points to either set over the whole range. Both recordings offer the A major Concerto, HWV296, and for good measure Hurford adds The cuckoo and the nightingale Concerto (with a Telemann movement in place of Handel's ad libitum) and an attractive Sonata in D minor. These extras might be the deciding factor, but it's more likely that dedication to or abhorrence of authentic instruments is likely to carry more weight. It would be a tough old ear, though, which failed to respond to the sunshine of these Hurford/Rifkin performances.'
