A record produced by an enthusiast is always welcome; and Gordon Reynolds has devised a particularly varied programme which makes good listening throughout its 14 items. Texts are provided, together with a translation of Tchaikovsky's Cherubim Song which is sung in Russian (and also of any archaic English in a piece such as W. J. Philips's I sing of a maiden that is makeles and of any Latin lines). The notes, also by Gordon Reynolds, are succinct and to the point. I will only add, for anyone who may wonder, that the organist, John Reynolds is no relation.
This is the first recording ever made in the Chapel of Hampton Court Palace or by its choir; and though I do not know the building, I am told than one would expect the singing to have a more resonant acoustic than it has. If this is so, the reason is that the choir have been too closely 'miked'. This also exposes the singers rather unfairly, since a slight fault from any one, of them shows, for the sound is not well blended by the close recording.
All the same, the programme, based on the great festivals of the Church's year, enclosed by a joyful morning canticle by Stanford and Balfour Gardiner's Evening Hymn, is so well chosen and wide-rangingthat every lover of English Church music should find it rewarding.'
