The Grieg Andante comes from 1878 and was among the batch of manuscripts, which also included a second quartet, that his widow Nina sent to Julius Rontgen for comment after his death. To quote the notes (much indebted to Norwegian word-order) ''In Grieg's Andante are the typical Griegian characteristic not much in evidence''. All the same it is a rather beautiful little piece, and by no means lacking in eloquence. Although Rontgen recommended that it should be published, it did not appear in print until 1978 when it was included in the Grieg Gesamtausgabe. The Oslo Trio make out a strong case for this piece which they play with dignity and an unaffected simplicity.
The remainder of this intelligently planned disc also comes off well: the Martin Piano Trio is given a characterful reading and so, too, is the Tchaikovsky in which they make the cuts approved by the composer (omitting the fugal variation No. 8 and the passage from pages 86 to 102 in the Eulenburg miniature score). The pleasure these performances give is somewhat diminished by the close balance, not immediately evident at the beginning of the Grieg but which soon becomes oppressive in climaxes. Indeed, in the sixth variation of the Tchaikovsky it comes close to discoloration. All the same the playing is very musical.'
