This third volume of Graupner’s keyboard works contains much that is charming, inventive, and even surprising on occasion. The opening C minor Partita has chromatic accents that are rather moving, and the Februarius suite, though slighter, is scarcely less engaging. Only in the closing chaconne of the D major Partita is there a possible flagging of invention, but then Soly plays with sufficient fluency and flexibility to hold the listener’s attention.
The series is beginning to acquire an impressive momentum, but that would hardly be the case if composer and performer had less to offer. Soly’s command of her subject is considerable, and it says a lot for the quality of the music that there is not a hint of special pleading about her performances. She simply plays with great elegance, as though convinced that Graupner’s relatively low profile hitherto were a non-issue. On the strength of this music, one is inclined to agree.
