This disc proposes a speculative selection of music that may have been performed at the coronation of Charles V in Bologna in 1530 (as happens so often, the plausibility of the selected music varies greatly). There are still too few recordings of Gombert’s music for one not to pass over a few niggles gladly enough: the recording of the Mass is too deeply recessed, with the result that Gombert’s admittedly thick textures tend towards muddle. The instrumentalists outshine the singers, but as a whole this is well worth investigating.'
