One of the major pleasures of the past few years for aficionados of British music has been the discovery that George Dyson was a very fine composer. The work by which he is best known, The Canterbury Pilgrims, gives little idea of the height to which he rises in Quo vadis, In honour of the city, The blacksmiths and Sweet Thames, run softly. Here, in this excellent transfer to CD, are several more works that reinforce this revised view. Hierusalem, one of his last works, is a wonderful piece, which I would bracket with Finzi's Dies natalis and Howells's Hymnus paradisi as one of the best examples of the mystical ecstasy which certain British choral works achieve.
Scored for the unusual combinations of solo soprano, chorus, string quartet, harp, organ and strings, Hierusalem is a vision of an innocent paradise beyond our grasp, the kind of vision that Mahler depicts in the finale of his Fourth Symphony. Valery Hill, the soloist, brings exactly the right yearning quality to her singing and the St Michael's Singers, for whom the work was composed, capture effortlessly the essence of choral writing that is distinctively English and yet, to my ears, has a Debussyan flavour. If nothing else on the disc is quite as memorable, that is only by comparison. The performances are first rate, as is the Hyperion recording. Very strongly recommended.'
