Author:
There is more variety of timbre and ensemble on this CD than might be supposed. The lute features in all four works (and has been recorded with quite exceptional clarity considering its small tone) but it is accompanied variously by one or two violins, viola d'amore, bass continuo and a ten-player chamber orchestra. In his review of the LP version, JD declared this ''by far the best account of this music to date''. The playing of these authentic instruments is of the highest order, with total security of pitch and phrasing and no sense of the difficulties which too often intrude. The excellent recording has both presence and space, with the chamber organ reticent but adding appropriate depth.'
