The lighter pieces are set in between the more serious, more substantial ones: the Introduction and Allegro, the Serenade, the Elegy. The contrast can make for enjoyable listening—where the music of both categories is as good as it is here. Yet it is perhaps arguable that the Introduction and Allegro might better now have been placed last. On LP a case for first in that it is easily found for separate listening, the piece most likely to call for this; on CD everything is found easily, the case for starting with (probably!) the best piece therefore less secure. The quality of the string playing and (where necessary) arranging—of the first class—remains equally of the first class on LP, is even a trifle brighter and clearer on CD, and seems even more since any surface problems encountered on LP (there are some) disappear altogether. Michael Kennedy's excellent sleeve-notes are reproduced intact.'
