Though the performers and the works are all Czech, the technicians behind this Exton issue are all Japanese, with the exception of two assitant engineers. The result is technically superb, bringing out the vivid qualities of Super Audio. Dvorák’s Czech Suite reveals the composer at his most relaxed and winning, fresh and open, light and transparent, with a charming Polka as the second of the five movements, a Sousedská (“Fairy-tale”) as the third and ending with a lively Furiant.

Suk’s Suite Pohadka makes an ideal coupling. The music was originally written as incidental music to a play, but Suk realised that in that form it would be heard by relatively few people and so devised this Suite, which is much more accessible. The result is a delight, also with a Polka as the seond movement, and with a bold finale full of cymbal clashes. You could hardly find performers more understanding than Mácal and the Czech Philharmonic.
