Piano Trio No. 3 |

Antonín Dvořák, Composer Borodin Trio |
Author:
I've not been able to hear the LP version of this piano trio about which JOC was enthusiastic in December, but the CD interpretation will of course be similar. I too have written with enthusiasm recently about this ensemble's Tchaikovsky and Brahms, but I did not find their Dvorak quite so distinguished. For my taste there is at times rather too much rubato (in the first movement the second subject goes at only half the speed of the first though no change of tempo is marked), but their expressiveness is in general admirable, and this ensemble also bring plenty of fire to the finale. Both string players have a beautifully smooth, even tone. The very able pianist sounds a shade too heavy at times but this is more the composer's fault than hers. As JOC wrote, the recording quality is warm and truthful, and no doubt there is even more clarity on CD than on the LP or cassette.'
