Until a few years ago, Delius the songwriter was known only by a handful of examples. But some enterprising recordings opened up this rewarding side of his art and music-lovers have been enabled to discover his attractive settings of Norwegian, German and French texts in addition to English. The piano accompaniments are sometimes blamed for the relative lack of interest in these songs. But Eric Fenby showed how effective they can be when played by a sensitive musician; and Eric Parkin's playing of four short piano pieces does not support a view of Delius as a piano-hater.
The Fenby and Parkin performances, splendidly recorded, were first available on Unicorn-Kanchana LPs issued in 1983 and 1984. Transferred to CD, they make a most satisfying disc. The 16 songs include Norwegian, French and English settings. Felicity Lott is in supremely lyrical voice and Anthony Rolfe Johnson's performance of I-Brasil is a marvellous evocation of exoticism. Sarah Walker's singing of Twilight Fancies is perhaps too operatically dramatic; she lacks Lott's vocal poise as exemplified in a ravishing performance of Avant que tu ne t'en ailles.
Koch International's Delius recital is of 18 songs recorded by the American soprano Ruth Golden, brilliantly accompanied by Stephen Sulich, who is well known as a conductor. The recording is bright and clear but tends to push the pianist into the background.
This is a bold choice for a recording debut. Only six items are duplicated from the English disc, so the avid collector of Delius songs need not hold back on that account. Golden has neither the charm nor the lyrical grace of Lott and her voice sometimes hardens unpleasingly under pressure, with her diction going to pieces in high-lying passages. But at her best she is a delightful singer, as in the four German settings, which include the lovely Die Nachtigal and the even lovelier Beim Sonnenuntergang.
The accompanying booklet is not the best feature of this Koch issue. The songs are not printed in the order they are sung and some lines are missing.'
