Author:
The Fenby and Parkin performances, splendidly recorded, were first available on Unicorn-Kanchana LPs issued in 1983 and 1984. Transferred to CD, they make a most satisfying disc. The 16 songs include Norwegian, French and English settings. Felicity Lott is in supremely lyrical voice and Anthony Rolfe Johnson's performance of
Koch International's Delius recital is of 18 songs recorded by the American soprano Ruth Golden, brilliantly accompanied by Stephen Sulich, who is well known as a conductor. The recording is bright and clear but tends to push the pianist into the background.
This is a bold choice for a recording debut. Only six items are duplicated from the English disc, so the avid collector of Delius songs need not hold back on that account. Golden has neither the charm nor the lyrical grace of Lott and her voice sometimes hardens unpleasingly under pressure, with her diction going to pieces in high-lying passages. But at her best she is a delightful singer, as in the four German settings, which include the lovely Die Nachtigal and the even lovelier Beim Sonnenuntergang.
The accompanying booklet is not the best feature of this Koch issue. The songs are not printed in the order they are sung and some lines are missing.'
