Author: Lionel Salter
The present disc is the second of six (the first, music by Vivaldi, is available on A66193, 8/86; CD CDA66193), each focusing on a composer who wrote variations on the famous La folia air. Corelli was by no means the first to do so (the sleeve's mention of Lully as the earliest takes no account of Kapsberger and Frescobaldi, long before him), but it was through the enormous popularity of his Op. 5 solo sonatas (the twelfth of which is given over to the Iberian tune) that it became so widely adopted by others. That admirable stylist Catherine Mackintosh puts it through its paces well, but is even better in the C major solo sonata, which she plays with fluent and elaborate graces. A contemporary arrangement for gamba of Op. 5 No. 11 is something of a curiosity; but transfer to a lower register and use of the gamba's ability to play chords make for a thickish texture. Highly enjoyable are the lightness and gaiety of the Corrente and very un-French Gavotte of Op. 4 No. 3, the penultimate Allegro of Op. 5 No. 3 and the concluding Gigue of Op. 2 No. 4; and the apparently spontaneous ornamentation by the two violins (responding alertly to each other) in Op. 5 No. 3 is delightful. The recordings have been made in an agreeably warm resonant acoustic at the low pitch of A = 392.'
