Author:
Copland's orchestral textures are such that they seem particularly to benefit from CD, which here conveys the music's freshness with especial vividness. The playing is absolutely splendid throughout, even if Dorati's interpretation of El Salon Mexico does not have quite the edge of Bernstein's LP version (CBS). Less familiar, and in fact less typical of the composer, is the early Dance Symphony. This receives what is probably the most satisfactory reading here. In the case of the Rodeo episodes, Dorati does not have quite the sympathy with popular idioms evident in the composer's own LP recording (CBS). All four readings are of superlative quality from the executive viewpoint, however, and certainly this is sonically an exhilarating record.'
