As a Chopin player, Cédric Tiberghien’s expressive notions in the name of Romantic style do not consistently ring true and, indeed, contradict the simplicity to which he aspires, according to an interview included in this release’s annotations. Cases in point: the tiny yet purposeless accelerandos in the A minor Mazurka, Op 6 No 2, and the slightly rushed beats that sound more careless than intentional. The little commas throughout the Mazurkas Op 6 No 3 and Op 24 No 2? Not necessary, because Chopin’s sophisticated rhythmic scansion speaks for itself – just ask Arthur Rubinstein. And if one must rubato-ise here or stretch a beat there in the B flat Mazurka, Op 7 No 1, at least try to get the dosage and the proportions right.

But when that happens, as in the lyrical Op 17 No 4, Op 59 No 3 and Op 63 No 3 Mazurkas, the results prove more convincing. Op 24 No 4’s epic scale and outsize inner voices evoke Horowitz from the 1950s, as do the B minor Scherzo’s contrived details and the Polonaise-fantaisie’s dynamic tapering. Perhaps the C minor Nocturne, Op 48 No 1, adds up to this recital’s best-realised interpretation, with its measured and sustained opening section and assiduous build into a shattering central climax. Harmonia Mundi provides Tiberghien with attractively robust engineering.
