An enterprising issue featuring two major works by neglected British composers. Arthur Butterworth’s First Symphony is a bold, rugged essay that successfully conveys a sense of mood from the various seascapes and landscapes that lie behind its inspiration. The late Ruth Gipps’s Second Symphony is the more British-sounding of the two, with more than a hint or two of VW and Moeran. Nevertheless, a work that draws one back for repeated hearings. Adequate performances. Worth exploring.'
