Nothing special here. There are so many good performances (and one great one—Karajan) of the Honegger symphony in the catalogue, plus Britten's own recording and some first-rate modern alternatives of the Sinfonia da Requiem. Most are more logically coupled. These performances from Stuttgart are well prepared and generally well played, though the finale of the Liturgique is wanting in the kind of excitement, power and zest that Karajan, Baudo and others bring to it. The orchestra is good, in spite of the fact the strings are no match in weight or lustre for their Berlin or Czech rivals. They are very well recorded, too, and in a less competitive market this disc might be welcome. The Sinfonietta comes off well and gives pleasure but the other pieces are better served elsewhere.'
