So here’s another welcome dip into the bran­tub of British Light Music Classics; and the mix is much as usual. Coates’s By the Sleepy Lagoon (in its later larger orchestral version) and Ketèlbey’s In a Monastery Garden (with uncredited male chorus) provide the points of contact for the relative newcomer to the series; but for old hands the interest may lie elsewhere. From the World War I era of graceful light music‚ for instance‚ we have first­class rarities by two composers missing from Marco Polo’s composer series‚ in Percy Fletcher’s coquettish Demoiselle chic and Charles Ancliffe’s rousing waltz‚ Thrills. Another composer still missing from that Marco Polo series is the master of mood music from the Second World War era‚ Charles Williams‚ and his inventiveness is equally brilliantly demonstrated by the ingenious Rhythm on Rails and the reflective A Quiet Stroll. There are also other welcome re­creations of pieces hitherto available only in their original recordings of some 50 years ago‚ notably Ray Martin’s Marching Strings (signature tune of ‘Top of the Form’) and Jack Beaver’s Waltonesque Cavalcade of Youth march. Perhaps the most enterprising inclusions are Frederick Rosse’s ‘Doge’s March’ and John Foulds’s ‘Keltic Lament’‚ the former somewhat bombastic‚ the latter proving an especially worthwhile rediscovery. At times I feel that Ronald Corp might make the music sparkle a little more‚ most especially in the complete Petite Suite de Concert‚ where the classic George Weldon/Philharmonia version remains unmatched. Yet there must still be much here to delight all listeners.
