When I reviewed the original issue of this disc I was impressed by a particular beauty in the nature of the recording, and after five years the sound still seems outstanding. It hasn't an especially demonstrable quality, but there is a certain elegance in the balance, and notable refinement and clarity. I'm also impressed once more by the superlative playing of the RPO, and by Previn's obvious affection for both works. He conducts in a wise, caring fashion, and the warmth and mellowness of each score are very well brought to the fore. Sometimes his direction is a bit lacking in sheer energy, however, and rhythms occasionally become a little stodgy, particularly in the Symphony's first and second movements. These deficiencies prevent a strong recommendation, but the performances are still very enjoyable.'
