Lindsay Quartet Ludwig van Beethoven, Composer |
Author: Robert Layton
In some ways the F major was the most impressive of the Lindsay set of the Rasumovsky Quartets and its appearance on CD has been eagerly awaited and cannot be too warmly welcomed. At the time I thought it ''second to none and superior to most'', and went so far as to say that the Lindsays give us ''the most consistenly illuminating and inspired accound of Op. 59 No. 1 at present on record''. I liked the ideally judged tempos, which sound completely right in each of the four movements, as well as the sense of space and the unforced expressive feeling. Though not so technically immaculate as the Alban Berg (part of a three-CD set on EMI CDS7 47127-8, 7/85) or the Melos (part of a three-CD set on DG 415 342-2GH3, 11/85), it strikes me at any rate as musically more penetrating and certainly more enjoyable. The only reservation must be that we are offered rather shorter measure than such rivals as the Talich/Calliope who couple Op. 59 No. 1 with the E flat major Quartet (Harp), Op. 74, thus offering 72 minutes as opposed to the 44 on this disc. However, the distinction of the playing and the truthfulness of the recording must earn this a strong recommendation.'
