The sleeve layout of this issue emphasizes Weber's Invitation to the dance, given an elegant, felicitous performance by Bonynge. But neither this nor the less interesting Les troyens ballet music (which, althought it has a strong Berliozian flavour, does not show its composer at his most charismatic, and rather ends in mid-air) forms the kernel of this issue. It is, of course, the complete ballet Mam'zelle Angot, originated for Massine's post-Diaghilev company and first staged in New York in 1943. It found its definitive form, however, in the Sadler's Wells version—also choreographed by Massine—of some years later. Gordon Jacob's score (after the fashion of Constant Lambert's Les patineurs) wittily borrows, principally from Lecocq's operetta La fille de Madame Angot (a hit of the 1870s), but includes music from other Lecocq sources. It is a gay, vivacious piece prettily orchestrated in the modern French style with some engaging tunes and a certain eclectic flavour, so that there are hints of several composers—from Adam to the Sullivan of Pineapple Poll—with Offenbach registering strongly in the final carnival scene.
Both Irving and Fistoulari have previously recorded the suite (HMV ESD7080, 11/79 and Decca ECS586, 9/71—both nla), which is perhaps enough for most purposes, but the 39 minutes of the complete score are entertaining enough when the performance, as it is here, is both polished and sparkling. The Kingsway Hall recording is in Decca's demonstration bracket on LP; the CD offers distinctinctly sharper detail, with greater inner presence and tangibility at piano and pianissimo levels. But the warmer LP quality, even though slightly blurred compared with the CD, has a marginally softer grained upper range and is not necessarily less truthful.'
