The four Suites BWV1066-9 can be compressed on to a single Compact Disc, as Janos Rolla has proved (Hungaroton/Conifer (1) HCD31018, 2/89), but otherwise they fall short of filling two—which is where the matter has usually been left to rest. You may prefer neat compartmenting to value for money, but if not you will be glad to have the available playing time put to good use as it is here with the Triple Concerto BWV1044 (22 minutes). Pinnock's has long been one of the very best period-instrument sets of the four Suites, but available only as a two-LP set; lest this may seem irrelevant, with only two Suites on the present CD, I hasten to report that the other two will be issued in the autumn, with the Harpsichord Concerto, BWV1057 as a bonus. Of the many good things on offer at this stage is the famous Air from Suite No. 3, not played by unisoni first violins but by a soloist (Simon Standage) and with its repeats beautifully embellished. The acoustic could, as NA noted, have been a little more resonant, but it is not cramped and the recording is crystal-clear.'
