Vieru’s Goldberg Variations are rather heavy going. The problem is partly the bass orientation of the recording (or of the instrument itself), but more importantly Vieru’s articulation can be lumpy or awkward, and there is too little variety of expression, tempo and colour. The extracts from the Clavierbuchlein fur Anna Magdalena Bach are played with more sensitivity, although there is still a tendency to untidy ornaments (try the Burlesca, track 7).'
