There is a sufficient variety of recordings of the Brandenburgs currently available to suit most tastes; yet there are always new insights to prevent any one ensemble from having the last word. Musica Antiqua Orchestra under the direction of recorder player Christian Mendoze has plenty of life, but too often fails in achieving the technical expertise which these concertos demand. Tempos are not always judicious, and the breakneck speed of the opening movement of Brandenburg No. 4 – though superficially exciting – is expressively void. A mixed pleasure.'
