When this recital was given in the spring of 1978‚ Auger was at the absolute height of her appreciable powers and obviously in fabulous voice. And given the irresistible repertory she offers here‚ this is a disc to treasure. Her tone and its management were ideal for her utterly apt choice of Lieder. Whether the mood is grave or gay‚ she captures it perfectly and her effortless command of German means that the text is always given its full due. Sad and/or intimate pieces‚ such as Haydn’s She never told her love‚ Mozart’s Als Luise die Briefe‚ Beethoven’s Wonne der Wehmut and Schubert’s Nähe des Geliebten are given the benefit of Auger’s full‚ appropriately plangent timbre. Then in cheerful songs‚ such as Mozart’s Der Zauberer‚ Beethoven’s Marmotte‚ Schubert’s Heidenröslein and Seligkeit‚ Auger adopts a suitably smiling tone. Finally for Mozart’s Die Alte‚ she successfully suggests the old woman of the title. In all‚ her treatment is natural and unaffected‚ proving her the true successor to Irmgard Seefried in this repertory. Werba seems happy playing one of Mozart’s fortepianos‚ and supports his singer faithfully. Just once or twice‚ there seem to be traces of distortion‚ probably caused by a worn tape‚ and there is some muddle in the track listing of the Mozart songs‚ but nothing should deter anyone acquiring this delightful recital‚ the soprano sounding so fresh and spontaneous recorded live.
