This is one of the most exciting organ recordings. I have come across. For one thing, we are hearing a most unusual modern instrument incorporating mutations arranged in unorthodox fashion. There is also a range of stops en chamade whose vivid, but not blasting, presence has been wonderfully caught. The organ, built in 1981 by Detlef Kleuker of Bielefeld, was tonally designed by Jean Guillou and his influence permeates this record. Keith John studied with Guillou and has adapted to his own technique that master's supersensitive staccato brilliance, as well as his passion for exploiting all the registers of the organ. Homage is further paid in Guillou's transcriptions of Vivaldi's D major Concerto and the wickedly humorous Prokofiev March.
Keith John also has a gift for making transcriptions and his version of Stravinsky's Circus polka brings the smell of sawdust into church. His own Rhythmic Energy, bowing though it does to Guillou, steers itself cunningly through a discernible pattern and ends with a well-timed flamboyant gesture. Liszt and Schumann speak clearly through his fingers, but the most impressive item is the Dupre Suite which best excercises his fantastic technique, through which the evanescent magic is released. The sound quality is superb.'
