The rant in question is an entertainingly free arrangement of one of the most popular 17th-century Italian dance songs, published with that title in London in 1652. Engagingly performed by the director of L’Avventura London, lutenist Žak Ozmo, it brings to a close an imaginative selection of Baroque chamber works that illustrate the theme of the presence of Italian music and musicians in late-17th- and early-18th-century London. There is much little-known repertory to savour here, from one of the Op 1 sonatas by the cellist-composer Giacobbe Basevi Cervetto, to the two-movement sonata for harpsichord by Pietro Domenico Paradisi which provides the opportunity for David Gordon to come into his own with a breathtakingly virtuoso account.

There is also more familiar fare, notably Corelli’s sonata for violin and continuo known as ‘La follia’, which became a classic on publication, and Albinoni’s well-known Oboe Concerto, Op 9 No 2, which is given a sympathetically affective reading by Geoffrey Coates. The former, a long set of variations, provides soloist Bojan Cicic with a fine opportunity to exploit the possibilities of a warm-toned Ruggieri violin from 1690. Indeed, the variety of textures and instrumental sound is one of the most attractive features of this disc, characterised as it is by sensitive musicianship and an admirable understanding of Baroque performance conventions.
