These Spanish canticles, assembled by King Alfonso the Wise to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary, contain some delightful stories of miracles attributed to her intercession. They are becoming increasingly popular with early-music ensembles. Like many other groups, Alla Francesca were faced when recording them with problems to which no ready answer can be found. For whom were they intended? Probably not the Court. How performed? We just haven’t a clue, except that there are many illustrations in the manuscript that depict musical instruments. But were the Cantigas accompanied? Perhaps these instruments are merely symbolic: we just do not know. What can be done to fill in the gaps left by imperfect notational indications?R1 '0012063'
