If you can't resist a Gilbert and Sullivan Gala, this may be the CD for you. The omens are certainly impressive, with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company's sometime Musical Director in charge, and soloists who include an internationally acclaimed contralto and today's acknowledged leading performer of G&S patter songs. In the event, Bramwell Tovey directs a well-paced Iolanthe Overture, Richard Suart delivers several dextrous numbers, there are some pleasant duets from tenor and soprano, and Maureen Forrester impersonates the Queen of the Fairies and Katisha with predictable aplomb.
The programme includes a couple of passages of dialogue, including the 'orphan/often' sequence from The Pirates of Penzance. Unfortunately tempos of the musical numbers tend to be a little sedate, and the cold, clinical sound does not help to create an atmosphere of high spirits. Be warned, too, that Ko-Ko's ''little list'' has been extensively rewritten to appeal to specifically Canadian tastes. Perhaps the real test is whether ''Three little maids'' with two of the parts sung falsetto by the comic baritone and the conductor appeals. I found it rather a drag. '
