Having listened to eight versions of the Italian Songbook recently in the course of preparing a book about Lieder on record, I have come to appreciate even more than before Wolf's own dictum that their contents are ''the most original of all my things''. The record-buying public doesn't seem to have reached out to meet the composer's own assessment, for none of the previous sets remains in the catalogue, and one of the more recent (1982) recorded performances, by Elly Ameling and Tom Krause, does not even appear to have been considered by CBS for release here, so this account is most welcome. By the way, the new record seems to be the first of a collection that will include other future recitals at Covent Garden.
Unfortunately not all the set is included here, only 33 of the 46 songs that make up this songbook, but most of the masterpieces, bar the one about the lascivious, hypocritical monks, is included, not in the published order but one that gives a nice alternation between the two books' mocking and serious pieces. As ever, most of the former fall to the soprano, and Cotrubas sings them with a neat turn of biting wit without ever indulging in verbal or vocal exaggerations. Indeed, sometimes she somewhat underplays the humour of the text by not varying her tone colour sufficiently, but she has the measure of the melodramatic ''Verschling' der Abgrund'' as much as the teasing of ''Du denkst mit einem Fadchen'' and the boredom of ''Wie lange schon'' (Geoffrey Parsons proving as adept as any before him at impersonating the halting serenade of the would-be violinist).
Thomas Allen brings his ideally warm and sensuous baritone to that outpouring of love implicit or explicit in so many of the poems and their settings. Nothing could be more tender, straightforward or loving than his account of ''Heb' auf dein blondes Haupt'', more serene than his pure legato in ''Benedeit die sel'ge Mutter''. Yet occasionally I feel that the interpretations are set at a slightly too low level of emotional intensity. Nobody necessarily wants the more overtly interventionist approach of Fischer-Dieskau, but as a via media there is Husch in the Hugo Wolf Society reissue (HMV mono RLS759, 3/81) showing a more ready way with words and music; indeed, in that large boxed set, many of these songs receive rather more imaginative treatment than here. But as a single-record representation of the composer, this is well worth having, not least for Parsons's contribution; none in my experience has played more characterfully what Eric Sams has called the grotesque braying in ''Schweig einmal still''. The recording is faithful to the warm Covent Garden acoustic, but sometimes the effect is a little subdued.AB
