More convincing as symphonic fantasia than fully fledged symphony, Wiren’s Fourth (1951-2) is none the less a classic score, vividly orchestrated and utterly compelling. The Fifth (1964) originated in incidental music and is more elusive but still involving. The Oscarsbalen Suite (“Oscar Ball”, 1949) serves to remind us what an adroit melodist Wiren was. Splendid performances.'
