The well-established son of a famous conductor and Wagnerian (Armin Jordan), Philippe Jordan’s Wagner from America and Europe has already been deemed collectible enough to be in demand on what we used to call ‘private’ issues. Here Erato, although it was his dad’s old label, has been rather mean to him. I know we’re in economic crisis but could they really only afford a Brünnhilde – albeit a superb one – for a single scene? A mean two CDs’ worth of 82 minutes of mostly orchestral Wagner feels very British – like the early 1950s or those old Prom weeks when there was a special ‘Wagner night’…

Mild joshing aside, the results are predictably front-rank. Jordan is one of our finest Wagner conductors today – he knows how it goes, how fast it should go and how to balance it. Neither he nor his own Paris house orchestra are at all thrown by the lack of singers (not as easy as it sounds if you want a really classy result, and this is one). And Stemme – in what is, I suppose, chronologically as released, her recorded debut in this scene – is in superb voice, steely and passionate by turns. I don’t want all these blank spaces under such a good Wagnerian but if you can’t handle the voices I would put this right up with the old Stokowski Philadelphia and Klemperer records.
