Here is a thoughtfully constructed programme of Vivaldi's concertos which makes effective use of contrasting textures and sonorities. Little of the music will be unfamiliar to Vivaldi enthusiasts though this recital puts to rights the curious inconsistencies of the Ricordi edition of RV556 and, as Michael Talbot says in his notes, the music in its original version is played here perhaps for the first time since Vivaldi's day. The two best known works are the Concerto in G minor, per l'orchestra di Dresda and another in G minor, La notte scored for flute and strings. The fine concerto grosso for the Dresden court orchestra, whose director was Pisendel—Vivaldi had met him in Venice in 1716—contains important obbligato parts for violins and oboe; John Holloway and Roy Goodman (violins) are evenly matched whilst providing interestingly contrasting sounds. The beautifully phrased oboe playing is that of the late David Relchenberg, whose performance here and, above all, in La pastorella, are features of this issue which I shall probably treasure for the rest of my life. What a sad loss to this repertoire was his tragically early death last year. La pastorella an enchanting example of Vivaldi's chamber concerto style, is lovingly realized by a gifted team of instrumentalists, Reichenberg's contribution is comparatively small but in the outer movements characteristically stands out for its light, Puckish articulation, a perfect complement to this Arcadian vignette, as well as for the sheer enjoyment which he took in playing his instrument and for the unfailing modesty and warmth of spirit that went with it.
The soloist in La nolle is the American flautist, Janet See. She gives an imaginative account of the music—there is quite a bit of scope for an inventive and sensitive player here—and is evocatively supported by the string ensemble. Her ornamentation of the second of three Largo sections comes off well and her passage-work in faster sections is fluent and articulate. Two other of the concertos here, RV114 in C major and RV575 in G major, are scored for strings only, RV114 is a ripieno work with a pleasing French flavour—the finale is an engaging chaconne—but it is modest compared with RV575 in which Vivaldi gathers two solo violins and two solo cellos. There are some resonant sonorities in Vivaldi's writing and some strikingly lyrical gestures, especially in the second movement and finale; the players, by and large, do justice to this fine work though the first movement is occasionally marred by sour violin intonation. The remaining work, RV556, is one of Vivaldi's concerti con molti instromenti. It is a splendid piece scored for pairs of treble recorders, oboes and clarinets, bassoon, strings and continuo with lute. Andrew Parrott and the Taverner Players bring plenty of colour to their interpretation and that is surely what Vivaldi would have wanted.
In short, a delightful programme, well constructed and well played. The presence of a plucked string instrument—archlute, theorbo, or in La pastorella most happily, a guitar—is welcome and adds considerably to colour and texture. Fine recorded sound, too. Recommended.'
